This week is special for some fortunate dog owners in Calgary.

Their beloved pets are the stars of a new initiative designed to support other local animals.

In Calgary, 48 dogs have been chosen to appear on the packaging of a dog-friendly ice cream created by Village Ice Cream.

Proceeds from the sales of this ice cream will benefit the Calgary-based animal rescue organization Canadian Animal Task Force (CATF).

The call for dog owners to apply for a spot on the packaging was issued in January.

“We received an overwhelming response,” said Beth Allison of Village Ice Cream. “About 2,500 applications came in, so we had a substantial task reviewing each one and selecting the very best.”

The CATF says the funds from the sales of the carrots-and-cream flavored dog ice cream will significantly support its programs.

These programs include extensive mobile spay and neuter clinics in rural areas across Alberta.

“We’re thrilled about this initiative and the community’s support for our important work, including disaster response efforts,” said R.J. Bailot from CATF. “We were involved in the Fort McMurray fires and helped with animal rescues during last year’s fires.”

The special edition dog ice cream will be available this week at Village Ice Cream shops throughout Calgary. Proceeds from sales in August will benefit the CATF.
