“It’s more common than most people think,“ Michael Natale, a licensed veterinary technician, tells PEOPLE of seasonal pet allergies.

Just like their human companions, pets can experience seasonal allergies.

In a discussion with PEOPLE, Michael Natale, a licensed veterinary technician, explains that cats and dogs can also endure allergic reactions during the same periods of the year when their human counterparts are affected.

“Every animal has the potential to experience allergies. Similar to humans, they can develop them as they age,” he emphasizes.

“It’s a more prevalent issue than many people realize,” Natale adds.

According to Natale, addressing allergies in dogs and cats requires a tailored approach, much like with humans.

“For instance, my Rottweiler suffers from severe allergies, so I administer weekly allergy injections, along with biweekly medicated baths and a specialized diet tailored to his specific allergens,” he shares.

Natale, who holds roles as an educator and a manager in talent acquisition and retention, notes a common allergen he frequently encounters in pets.

“I frequently encounter pets allergic to chicken, a common ingredient found in many pet products,” he elaborates.

To assist pets in managing their allergies, Natale advises PEOPLE that owners should “initially identify the specific allergens affecting them.”

“To accomplish this, your primary veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary dermatologist can conduct allergen testing,” he suggests.

Natale further recommends, “Once you know the allergen, make every effort to prevent your pet’s exposure to it.”

“Thoroughly review product ingredients and allergy medications recommended by your veterinarian, and above all, have your pet evaluated if you notice any concerning changes in their condition,” he emphasizes.
