A Canadian cat named Axel “Biggie Smalls” has garnered viral attention for his documented weight loss journey. According to CTV News Ottawa, Axel was rescued earlier this year by his owner, Kristine Segui.
Through a regimen of “a special diet and some exercise,” Axel has shed 10 pounds since February, as reported by the outlet. Segui described the achievement as “incredible,” emphasizing that their goal goes beyond weight loss to ensure Axel enjoys typical cat activities like jumping and exploring.
“He’s only seven years old,” Segui remarked. “He still has a lot of life ahead of him, and we want to make sure he gets to enjoy it.”
Segui commenced documenting Axel’s weight loss journey earlier this year, starting with a TikTok clip posted in February.
“Meet Axel aka Biggie Smalls. He was surrendered to a local shelter this week at a whopping 43lbs,” the caption of the first post reads.
Shortly after, another video was shared stating, “He may be a thicc boy now but this beautiful dude is on his way to a much better life,” while another clip mentions, “Axel is hungry allll the time but he’s doing the best he can with diet and exercise.”
In a recent update on TikTok towards the end of last month, Segui recorded her pet’s weigh-in, celebrating his weight loss progress with the caption, “A very special OFFICIAL Weigh in Friday!!!!!! This is the one that counts!! WE DID IT!! Go Biggie or go home baby!!!!”
Segui shared that Axel has “gathered quite a following of people who cheer his weight loss progress every Friday and root for his well-being.”
With over 130,000 followers, she now aims for Axel to shed another 10 to 15 pounds in the coming year.
“I’ve fostered hundreds of cats, and he’s like a toddler. He’s part of our family now,” Segui told CTV News Ottawa.
As the director of the Ferdinand and Friends Animal Rescue Network, Segui has initiated a fundraiser for the organization to assist other overweight cats in need of support.
