When we have a pet as part of our family, it brings so much joy to our lives and memories. But the reality of being a pet parent is that we’re very likely to outlive them. And that grief can be really hard.
This Community Has a Memory Tree for Pets Who Have Died
Courtney, who says she’s from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, was going for a walk when she came across a very special tree.
“Went for a walk and found a Christmas tree dedicated to people’s pets that have passed,” the text on the video reads.
And looking at the memorial notes on the tree, they were a mix of sad and sweet.
“Russel, see you on the next level, my angel,” one note read.
Another was a photo of a sweet Pug named Martini, a cat named Hobey, a dog named Foster who was “so well loved,” and several memorials for sweet cats who have passed the rainbow bridge.
Many of the memorial notes included photos of beautiful dogs and cats who are no longer here, love notes for their lost little ones, and favorite toys of the pets who can no longer play with them.
The video went viral, with thousands of comments left sharing how touching this tree is to them as fellow pet parents.
“They’re all playing around that tree together,” one person wrote.
“Some of them crossed the rainbow bridge decades ago, but they’re still on that tree, still very much loved after all these years,” someone else added.
“Their lives are never long enough,” shared another.
“The dog with his chicken toy got me good,” admitted another TikTok user.
How to Cope With the Grief of Losing a Pet?
According to The Humane Society of the United States, coming to terms with grief after losing your pet isn’t easy. But there are a few steps you can take to help give yourself some understanding and grace.
“Acknowledge your grief, and give yourself permission to express it. Allow yourself to cry,” the organization says.
Adding: “If you live alone, the silence in your home might feel deafening, but acknowledging it will allow you to prepare for the emotions you might feel. Suppressing your feelings of sadness can prolong your grief.”
Grieving a pet is very similar to grief from losing a human, and being kind to yourself and knowing when to reach out to others are important to walking through grief in a healthy way.
This tree memorial is one beautiful way to honor our lost pets.
