When it comes to Canada’s most beloved pets, cats are leading the pack.

According to PetSmart Canada, cat adoptions have consistently outpaced dog adoptions across the country for the past several years.

To mark the launch of PetSmart Charities of Canada National Adoption Week (July 21–27), the organization has released a list of Canada’s Top 10 cat-loving cities—and one Ottawa-area community cracked the top five.

Nepean landed in fourth place, with Cambridge, Ont., taking third, East York, Ont., in second, and Langley, B.C., claiming the top spot.

In a press release, Amiee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities of Canada, said cats are enjoying a surge in popularity.

“This index shows us that cat parenting is more universal than you might think, and those old stereotypes no longer apply,” Gilbreath said.
“More people than ever are enjoying the playful nature of cat companionship. Cats can thrive in smaller living spaces, and their independence often makes them incredibly appealing to pet parents who can’t get out for regular walks.”

The rankings were based not only on adoption numbers but also on how much residents in each community spend on cat toys, treats, and other feline products.

Gilbreath encouraged Canadians to consider welcoming a new cat into their home during National Adoption Week.

“We encourage all Canadians to consider adding a new feline family member during PetSmart Charities of Canada National Adoption Week, July 21–27 at PetSmart stores.”

Throughout the week, PetSmart locations across the country will host adoption events in partnership with local animal welfare organizations, helping connect cats and kittens with their forever homes.

The organization also noted that summer is peak kitten season, when many shelters face overwhelming intakes and an urgent need for permanent homes for surrendered animals.
